PRIMARY PURPOSE/GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

In the summer of 2024, for the thirty-first consecutive year, the Williamson Gallery will hire three paid, full-time, ten-week summer interns sponsored by the Getty Marrow Undergraduate Internship program. According to the Getty guidelines, these internships aim "to expose college students from backgrounds that have been underrepresented in the arts to careers in museums and visual arts organizations. The program offers paid internships in core areas of museum work such as curatorship, conservation, education, publications, and public programming. No prior work experience or educational background in the arts is required."

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

This information is intended to be a descriptive of the key responsibilities of the position. The list of essential functions below does not identify all duties performed by any single incumbent in this position. Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Assists with the cataloging, organization, and maintenance of the Scripps College collections, ensuring their proper documentation and ongoing care and gaining hands-on collections management experience.
  • The Collections Intern will be trained to use Embark and ContentDM systems to digitize, optimize, and catalog images.
  • The Collections Intern will also assist with documenting and cataloging new acquisitions and updating the locations of artworks from the Scripps College collections on display throughout the campus.
  • Additionally, the Collections Intern will support Scripps College's Director and Sally Preston Swan Librarian for the Ella Strong Denison Library, Jennifer Martinez Wormser, in the management and description of Denison Library's collections.
  • Active support for the College's Principles of Community and Principles of Diversity in the performance of job duties.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS:

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • Candidates must be currently enrolled undergraduate students and have completed at least one semester of college by June 2024.
  • Must be a resident of or attend college in Los Angeles County.
  • Students who have already served as Getty interns at the Gallery are not eligible for this internship.

HOURS & CLASSIFICATION AND STATUS:

This is a temporary, full-time, 10-week, non-exempt level position. Non-benefits eligible.

This assignment is expected to begin on June 10, 2024 and is expected to end on or before August 16, 2024.

Hourly rate: $16.25. The hourly rate of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty, andtraining.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

None.
