Position Summary:

Apellis is seeking an attorney as the Lead Counsel for the Research and Discovery Functions. Reporting to the Deputy General Counsel, R&D and Privacy, this individual will be responsible for providing strategic legal counsel and business advice as a partner to the Research and Discovery Functions.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Provide legal guidance that aligns with regulations and Apellis with respect to research and discovery activities.
  • Negotiate complex strategic partnering agreements including research and discovery collaborations, co-commercialization agreements, and pharmaceutical licensing agreements.
  • Develop and revise policies and training and review templates, playbooks and processes and revise as required.
  • Capable of independently interpreting complex existing agreements and advising on complex situations that may arise related to transactions.
  • Develop a thorough understanding of and familiarity with the Company's business, its people, products, markets, facilities, customers and collaborate with the colleagues in the Apellis Legal Team.
  • Partner with the Global Compliance Team to provide insights into Training and Monitoring, as well as to coordinate our global efforts.
  • Assist in the selection and direction of the work of outside counsel, including defining project objectives and managing projects.

Education, Registration & Certification:

  • Juris Doctor from an ABA accredited law school and in good standing with the state bar of the jurisdiction where licensed

Experience:

  • A minimum of 10 years of legal experience
  • Preference for in-house experience at a global biotechnology, life sciences or pharmaceutical company or advising such companies at a law firm.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:

  • Detailed knowledge of the US Anti-Kickback Statute, privacy-laws, and regulatory guidances. Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act and other government regulation of pharmaceutical products OR similar laws internationally is required.
  • High degree of personal ethics, integrity, and accountability
  • Proven ability and interest in working across a broad range of subject matter areas and succeeding in the fast-paced environment of a biotechnology company.
  • Capable of appropriately triaging workflow, setting clear priorities and expectations with business partners, and efficiently delivering results in a pragmatic and risk-balanced manner.
  • Ability to develop and maintain strong business relationships across the company and contribute to cross-functional or departmental projects.
  • Preference for a background in biochemistry or chemistry.
