This position is part of the Space Systems Development (SSD) business unit. SSD develops next-generation concepts and systems to advance our future of living and working in space sustainably.

As part of a hardworking team of diverse engineers, you will collaborate with the Systems Engineering and Integration team to develop an architecture, concept of operations, and system requirements. Develop lower-level Environmental Control and Life Support (ECLS) verifiable requirements in conjunction with affected systems and internal customers. Define a master hardware list and lead the execution through detailed design, analysis, manufacture, test and verification. Evaluate hardware providers for technical, cost, and schedule adherence to the requirements and partner with the procurement team to drive execution. Interface with affected systems and teams (ECLSS, crew systems, Avionics and Software, EPS, etc) throughout the life cycle of the hardware development. Develop technical solutions and execute development, testing, and analysis to support technology maturation and down-selects.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Minimum of a B.S. degree in chemical, mechanical, electrical, aerospace, or environmental engineering or related engineering field.
  • 7+ years technical experience in design and analysis of space systems, preferably spacecraft, in-space stages, and/or landers and 2+ years leading a team and/or project
  • Experience across the product life cycle (pre-conceptual design to prototyping to flight hardware qualification to field support)
  • Ability to apply judgement, developed through theory and experience, to assess the appropriate level of detail required in an ECLS System model
  • Demonstrated understanding of fundamental chemical processes, thermodynamics, fluid systems.
  • Demonstrated technical expertise in engineering analysis and design methods for performance prediction and sizing of fluid systems and chemical processes employed in spacecraft life support systems, or environmental control systems for submarines, aircraft, or commercial and residential buildings.
  • Experience with research and development of one or more technologies relevant to life support systems for extreme environments with specific focus on air revitalization technologies.
  • Familiarity and experience with hands-on prototyping and design, experiment design, test methods, and general laboratory skills
  • Experience managing and working collaboratively in small teams on fast-paced projects
  • History of developing solutions with partially defined requirements and changing criteria
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • M.S. or Ph.D. in a relevant scientific or engineering discipline.
  • Experience with spacecraft life support/environmental control (ECLS) technologies and architectures.
  • Test facility instrumentation and Data Acquisition and Control Systems
  • Ability to transition between analysis and design to build and test activities.
  • Strong project management and team leadership skills.
  • Proficiency in Creo or other CAD design tools
  • Proficiency in MATLAB, SINDA/FLUINT, COMSOL or other multi-physics modeling tools
  • Experience with a scripting language or platform such as Matlab or Python
  • Experience utilizing tools such as Confluence and JIRA
  • Experience with proposal development

Compensation range for on site WA applicants is $146,645-$205,302
