The External Engagement and Communications group supporting the Nuclear Science & Technology (NS&T) Directorate is looking for an Executive Nuclear Science & Technology Communications Lead to help share progress toward INL's vision of changing the world's energy future and securing our nation's critical infrastructure. And we're surrounded by some of the West's most iconic mountains, rivers and national parks (Yellowstone, Grand Teton)!

You will work a 9x80 schedule working on-site in our Research & Educational Campus offices in Idaho Falls with every other Friday off!

You will report to the Manager of Science Communications.

Responsibilities Include:
  • Through direct and ongoing interaction with directorate leadership, the successful candidate will support the development of communication priorities and devise a communication strategy for achieving the organization's outreach goals.
  • These goals include key research and demonstration efforts, program development, Lab-Directed Research & Development, and industry and university engagement.
  • The Executive Communications Lead will attend directorate leadership meetings, selected tours, conferences and stakeholder engagement opportunities to stay current on developments and prepare or assign communications associated with these activities.
  • You will need to become familiar INL's Laboratory Plan and NS&T strategic planning objectives. They will be embedded with the NS&T Associate Laboratory Director office and work continuously with directorate leadership and staff to complete communication on NS&T's priorities, goals, strategy and sensitivities.
  • The NS&T Executive Communications Lead will prepare and refine leadership talking points and presentations, facilitate complex news media interactions, and create a conference engagement strategy.
  • NS&T leadership will work with this hire to establish and implement directorate communication priorities including conference sponsorship/participation and leadership speaking engagements, and directorate communications such as fact sheets, monthly highlights, websites, and overview presentations.
  • The NS&T Executive Communications Lead will coordinate activities of the NS&T communications team that helps define target audiences, selects effective communication channels, creates content, refines messages appropriately and supports the communication needs of key research and development programs.
  • The Executive Communications Lead will also support the NS&T ALD in internal communications to NS&T Staff and NS&T announcements within the laboratory.
  • You will interface with INL's Communications department, including a lab wide nuclear communications lead.
  • As a "matrixed" employee based in one organization and working for another, the Executive Communications Liaison will maintain regular contact with both the home org (Communications) and work org (NS&T) to prioritize projects and enlist specialized staff.
Qualifications Minimum Requirements:

Requires a relevant bachelor's degree in a technical discipline with an emphasis in communications or a degree in communications, public relations, journalism, marketing or a field related to technical communications, and a minimum of 8 years related experience or advanced degree and 6 years' experience.

Requires prior communications experience, and strong preference for previous experience with science or engineering public communication.

Prior experience or knowledge of nuclear energy strongly preferred.

  • Should have experience in public involvement in technical or scientific issues, as well as writing and producing materials for the general public.
  • Requires demonstrated ability to understand technical principles and communicate technical topics in simple terms.
  • Should be respectful enough to skillfully negotiate with researchers to achieve mutually agreeable communications materials.
  • Must demonstrate excellent writing skills and familiarity with AP Style, and excellent oral, digital, social media and visual communications skills.

Job Information:

Salary PR0400-Grade 210 ($95,928 - $158,232)
