Senior Systems Engineer

ACCOUNTABILITY STATEMENT

The Senior Systems Engineer will plan, design, configure, and maintain VyStar's enterprise server and storage environment and will manage and further develop VyStar's private and public cloud infrastructure. The person in this role will work closely with development teams and system engineers to design and implement on-premises and cloud resources in an optimal manner. They will review environment to validate implemented technologies, improve performance and reliability, and ensure security practices are followed. The incumbent will also review cost optimization and ensure correct structure and tagging are in place for cost awareness and departmental chargeback. This role will serve as a technical subject matter expert by actively participating in configuration consultation, vendor evaluation, and problem resolution of multiple systems. The candidate should have a clear understanding of how to research, design, implement, and troubleshoot information systems, cloud technologies, and technology solutions in support of business needs. Under limited supervision, the candidate will be required to effectively manage and prioritize assigned projects, design complex multi-system solutions to meet the needs of the business. They will be required to make recommendations in these areas with a high level of technical competency.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supports and manages the VyStar virtual and physical server environment, storage, and related infrastructure. Ensures the systems are functioning at optimal levels. This includes the monitoring of the systems hardware and storage platform. Additionally, the incumbent will be responsible for managing the allocation of the physical space.
  • Specifies, procures, and implements, server, storage, and cloud technologies. Evaluates factors such as vendor specifications, number of departments, and employees serviced by data processing equipment, volume of transactions, time requirements, cost constraints, security requirements, access restrictions, and business continuity to determine hardware configurations.
  • Analyzes information to determine, recommend, and plan layout for type of computers and peripheral equipment, or modifications to existing equipment and systems, that will provide capability for proposed projects/workload, efficient operation, effective use of allotted space, and system recoverability.
  • Provides assistance in maintaining and troubleshoot systems as necessary. This includes internally-developed systems, VMware, Citrix, Microsoft clustering, SCCM, ADFS, Enterprise storage platforms (Dell Unity, PowerStore, PowerScale), and others. Provides input into the deployment of Dynamic Host Control Protocol (DHCP), Dynamic Domain Name System (DNS), and other sub-systems as needed.
  • Assists in design and roll out of cloud technologies including Office 365 and Microsoft Azure.
  • Participates in information technology projects and is accountable to tasks, milestone dates, and statuses.
  • Documents related technical procedures, operations manuals, and other guidance. This person also acts as a liaison between VyStar and vendors regarding system-related issues.
  • Mentors and provides guidance to other engineers as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION

This position requires a 4-year degree in Information Systems, Computer Engineering, or a related academic area and a minimum of 8 years' experience as a systems engineer or in a related position. Additional years of related experience in the field may be substituted for the formal education.

EXPERIENCE

  • 5 to 7 years of Enterprise-level work experience in Systems Engineering or in a related position with physical and virtual Microsoft-based systems; ideally in a financial services organization (or related industry)
  • Technical certifications or equivalent work experience required: MCSE or Azure Expert certification, VCP, CCP or CCE
  • The successful candidate will have experience in designing enterprise-level environments for enterprises using hundreds of servers, many locations, and thousands of employees
  • Experience with establishing technology guidelines based on best practices in enterprise-level systems engineering
  • Demonstrated ability to lead major project initiatives from end to end

SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills are required.
  • Must demonstrate expert knowledge of three-tier, converged and hyperconverged systems including Cisco UCS, Nutanix and Dell servers. Must have expert knowledge supporting Dell/EMC SAN architectures.
  • Expert knowledge of Windows Server 2019/2022, Virtualization technologies such as VMware and Hyper V, Citrix. Knowledge and experience required for cloud services including Microsoft Azure, Microsoft Office 365 environments, and AWS cloud services.
  • Experience with automation technologies and the ability to streamline processes a plus
  • Install, configure, maintain, and upgrade server operating systems and applications.
  • Advanced troubleshooting abilities across multiple technologies and vendors. Able to calmly provide support on bridge lines during outages.
  • Recognize and troubleshoot problems with server hardware and applications software. Establish and maintain system documentation, standards, and procedures.
