Your tasks

The ideal candidate should be a practicing engineer with 2 to 5 years of experience in the design of structures for natural hazard related loads. This is a work-from-home, full-time position conducting natural hazard related loss evaluations of energy (renewable) projects, natural hazard related loss prevention of existing industrial facilities, and civil/structural plan review for natural hazard related concerns. This position will involve travel throughout the United States and Europe. Experience in wildland fire assessment would be considered a plus. Please note that domestic and/or international travel may be required.

Responsibilities:

Conduct natural hazard loss evaluation of National and International renewable (solar, onshore/offshore wind) projects for construction financing and/or procurement of insurance. Most engagements will be desktop (i.e., performed from home office) evaluations with the potential for in-person site surveys as the need develops.

Conduct in-person (or virtual where appropriate) natural hazard loss prevention surveys of existing industrial (pharmaceutical, consumer goods, mining, etc.) facilities worldwide.

Conduct desktop plan reviews of new construction or retrofit of existing structures for general building code (national or foreign) compliance or commonly accepted property loss control practice.

Evaluate buildings and properties for natural hazard related risks and develop preliminary mitigation measures.

Prepare reports using established formats.

Maintain client satisfaction.

Ability and willingness to communicate frequently if required by telephone, fax and email and other communication tools to ensure that the organization's business is completed effectively and in a timely manner.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 5 pounds.

Your qualifications

Education and Experience:

A Civil or Construction Engineering undergraduate degree.

2 - 5 years of experience in the design of structures for at least one natural hazard related load (earthquake, flood, ice, rain, snow, volcanic ash or wind). Educational credit for post-graduate curriculum/degree may count towards the experience requirement.

Specific Skills and Knowledge:

For US candidates only: Basic knowledge of U.S. design standards (ASCE 7, ASCE 24, ACI 318, AISC 360), government hazard maps (FEMA National Flood Maps) and building code (IBC) as they relate to natural hazard loads (earthquake, flood, ice, rain, snow, volcanic ash or wind).

For European candidates only: Basic knowledge of Eurocode design standards (EN 1990 - EN 1999), government hazard maps (various National Flood Maps) as they relate to natural hazard loads (earthquake, flood, ice, rain, snow, volcanic ash or wind).

Familiarity with MS Office and PDF programs (Adobe Acrobat and/or Bluebeam).

Familiarity with other international building codes is not required but considered a plus.

Familiarity with catastrophe modeling (RMS, AIR and/or Corelogic) is not required but considered a plus.

Familiarity with NFPA 1140 (Wildland Fire Protection) is not required but considered a plus.

Self-starter with a positive outlook and motivated attitude.

Great time management skills (organization, prioritization, communication, and planning).

Able to meet manageable deadlines without exceeding set budget.

Demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills.
