This role contributes to improving Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) performance, helping the organization to deliver a high performing culture through clear accountability and a skilled organization in the Motion NEMA Motors based in Westville, Indiana. You will be responsible for assisting the ABB Westville plant in accomplishing the safety objectives that reflect world class values. In partnership with managers and employees, the HSE Specialist is also responsible for providing guidance that will ensure the plant's operations comply with environmental laws and regulations while ensuring a workplace that is safe and free of hazards for our employees.

Your responsibilities

  • Assist with the administration and maintenance of policies and procedures to maintain compliance with OSHA (Occupational Safety & Health Act) requirements
  • Coordination of environmental program and performs tasks related to the safe handling and disposal of hazardous chemicals
  • Monitor compliance with the environmental program through audits, inspections, spot checks and regular plant walk throughs
  • Assist with facility projects related to sustainability and enhancing employee environmental safety
  • Assist with the ABB Way initiative
  • Perform appropriate environmental tests and assist with reports to company officials and government agencies as required
  • Maintain industrial hygiene records, SDS (Safety Data Sheets) information and ensures equipment and supplies for emergency response are available and up to date
  • Develop and maintain an emergency response plan. Coordinate and participate in any response actions following a spill or release of hazardous materials
  • Regularly review EPA requirements and changes for impact to plant policies and procedures
  • Maintain in depth knowledge of existing and proposed country and state specific safety and environmental legal regulations
  • Work closely with operations teams to ensure effective implementation of safety initiatives to achieve the goal 0 accidents
  • Aid HSE SA compliance through audits, process/equipment review, management of change program and proactive risk reduction projects
  • Assist with incident/accident investigations and develop corrective and preventive action plans
Your background

  • Bachelor's Degree with minimum 2 years experience OR Associate's Degree with minimum 4 years experience
  • Previous experience with hazardous materials disposal and DOT Hazmat requirements - Safety (CSP, CIH), Lean, OSHA, EMT Certifications - SAP - Intelex HSE Software preferred
  • Experience investigating EHS incidents and assessing risk is required
  • Ability to develop materials, facilitate presentations and deliver effective safety training is required
  • Must be able to advise and guide managers and supervisors on accident prevention and loss control enhancements and provide interpretation of related policies and procedures
  • Must possess a good working knowledge and application of current local, state and federal environmental, health and safety (EHS) regulations
  • Ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with federal, state and local regulators is required
  • Experience with OSHA 510, 511 for CFRs 1910 and 1926 is preferred, as well experience implementing ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001
  • Candidates must already have a work authorization that would permit them to work for ABB in the US
