Job Description

Legal Dive seeks a senior reporter to provide timely, insightful coverage of the in-house legal profession and its operations function. Coverage includes a mix of quick turnaround news stories, enterprise reporting and in-depth features that help in-house counsel protect their organizations and turn the legal function into a value-add part of the enterprise.

The senior reporter will also work with the Legal Dive team to conceive and execute bigger editorial projects.

Legal Dive is a nationally recognized publication covering the evolving and dynamic in-house counsel and legal operations professions. Senior reporters are expected to own their beat, pitch ideas and pursue stories based on their source building, keen observations and industry knowledge.

Successful candidates will chase down scoops, juggle daily and longer-term deadlines and develop and write stories that capture the impact of court decisions, regulatory developments and technology changes on the practice of corporate law and the operations of the in-house legal team. The beat includes legal developments as well as changes in how in-house teams operate. Covering legal operations means covering changes in technologies that help in-house lawyers do their work. That includes contract management, e-discovery, legal hold, billing and document drafting technology.

This position will report directly to Legal Dive's lead editor.

What you'll do:

The Legal Dive senior reporter will regularly write high-impact stories that lead our coverage, from breaking news briefs to enterprise stories and in-depth features about the trends affecting the in-house legal profession and its operations function. You will monitor your beat, regularly pitch stories, cultivate relationships with diverse stakeholders and hunt down scoops. The Legal Dive senior reporter will help identify key industry storylines the publication can own and will develop and execute on industry-leading stories.

Qualifications
  • 5+ years experience in a daily news environment, with at least 3 years of experience in writing about legal issues.
  • A proven track record of reporting and writing on legal developments or legal tech innovations.
  • An interest in issues that impact a national audience of in-house legal leaders, including chief legal officers, general counsel, associate counsel and legal operations professionals.
  • Ability to interpret and analyze court decisions, settlement agreements, regulatory requirements - and to connect the dots to highlight their impact on corporate strategies.
  • Ability to quickly take ownership of specific beats through original reporting and building relationships with important and diverse sources
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced news environment; deadline-oriented time management skills and ability to turn around stories on tight deadlines.
  • Experience writing web headlines and editing copy.
  • Bachelor's degree or better in journalism, English or related field.
  • A law degree isn't required but a J.D. degree combined with journalism experience can be a plus.
