Position Overview
Reporting directly to the Board of Directors through the ACS Chief Executive Officer, the ACS Secretary will serve as an officer of the Society and member of the Executive Leadership Team and will perform all duties normally associated with the position of the corporate secretary of an organization. In this capacity, the Secretary is responsible for providing staff support and assistance to the President, President-Elect, and Immediate Past President of ACS, the Board of Directors, its Chair, its Executive Committee, the Council of the Society and its Council Policy Committee, Committee on Nominations & Elections, and Committee on Committees in thedischarge of their duties. The successful candidate will be a sharp, engaged, collaborative, and process-oriented partner with high emotional intelligence and exceptional communication and organizational skills.

Key Responsibilities
* Participates in Society planning and policy development, including development of the long-term vision and contingency plans.
* Prepares agendas, motions, minutes, and maintains ACS's official records.
* Facilitates the smooth operation of ACS governance meetings to ensure compliance with parliamentary procedure (i.e., Roberts Rules of Order), as appropriate.
* Oversees budget preparation and the adherence to authorized budgets and financial policy objectives.
* Advises on the selection, maintenance, and optimization of appropriate technology to simplify and enhance governance communication, participation, and voting.
* Performs other duties as necessary and assigned.


Qualifications
* 12+ years related administrative/management experience including the supervision of critical organizational functions.
* Outstanding executive leadership skills with a proven ability to support a successful, advancing organization with various constituencies.
* Experience managing complex Boards, committees, or other groups, including considerable experience leading a team.
* Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate (both orally and in written form) and interact effectively with significant decision makers, Boards, and employees.
* Ability to work proactively, collaboratively, cooperatively, and as a member of a team, while empowering direct reports and emphasizing accountability.
* Science background and/or terminal degree preferred (e.g., J.D., Ph.D.).

Position Location:

The role will be based in the ACS Headquarters in Washington, DC. ACS employees work a hybrid work schedule, consisting of working onsite, three days per week. ACS employees are in the office on Tuesday and Wednesday with the third in-office day scheduled in consultation with the manager. While always welcome to work in the office, employees may work the other two days of the week from a location of their choice.
