Job Description

Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company with a mission to make it safe and easy for people and things to get where they’re going. Since our start as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has been focused on building the Waymo Driver—The World’s Most Experienced Driver™—to improve everyone's access to mobility while saving thousands of lives now lost to traffic crashes. Our Waymo Driver powers Waymo One, our fully autonomous ride-hailing service, as well as Waymo Via, our trucking and local delivery service. To date, Waymo has driven over 20 million miles autonomously on public roads across 25 U.S. cities and conducted over 20 billion miles of simulation testing.

At Waymo, we are mission-driven and believe deeply in the opportunity of autonomous driving technology to improve mobility and make people's lives better. We are united by purpose and responsibility (for our employees and riders alike). We are looking for kind, committed, employees who have integrity, dream big, work together as one team and create a sense of belonging for one another that is the foundation of our culture. We want each team member to feel welcomed and included in every step of our exciting journey.

The Simulation Infrastructure team is responsible for creating reliable, scalable, and cost effective Simulation based products that evaluate the Waymo Driver’s software stack at a massive scale.  We solve complex technical challenges to build services and tools for a broad range of customers – Software Engineers, Product, Data Science, System Engineering, and more. So if you are a cross-functional Engineering Leader who is interested in building the next generation of Simulation products and services, we’d love to hear from you!

While each day at Waymo is different, your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Leading an Infrastructure team that serves the Simulation-based Evaluation needs for a large and diverse set of customer teams across Waymo
  • Setting the technical vision and direction for your team, and also influencing the direction of the broader Infrastructure Organization. This includes identifying opportunities and critical issues spanning multiple teams, organizations, and use cases - and playing a key role in defining their technical solutions
  • Managing a medium size team (5-7) of junior and senior SWEs, organizing them into effective sub-teams with clear missions, projects, and APIs
  • Contributing production grade code, executing code reviews, driving and influencing detailed technical designs
  • Aligning and defining plans for your team in addition to influencing planning and strategy of partners and the larger Organization

At a minimum we’d like you to have:

  • Hands-on experience building large-scale distributed systems
  • Proficient in C++, or a strong willingness to learn
  • 2+ years directly managing high performing Software Engineers
  • Demonstrated experience working cross functionally with Product, Program, Data Science etc.
  • History of data-driven decision making

It’s preferred if you also have:

  • Experience working with different types of large scale systems
  • History of working on Infra teams with multiple different customers
  • Experience with evaluation tools, data analysis, and data science concepts
  • 10+ years of industry experience as a Software Engineer/Technical Expert
