POSITION SUMMARY

The Motor Grader Operator operates grader to spread and level dirt, gravel, and stone, to grade specifications in construction projects, such as highways, streets and temporary roads. The Grader Operator drives the machine and moves levers to regulate height and angle of grader blade, loosens packed soil to permit grading, and to tilt front wheels of grader when making sharp turns.

JOB DUTIES

  • Read and interpret equipment inspection documentation from previous shifts before conducting pre-operational inspection. Provides complete, legible, and accurate information in documents in timely manner.
  • Describes Equipment and Attachments (types and sizes of graders, components and functions, capacities/capabilities of graders, ground-engaging tools, and attachments and accessories).
  • Locates components to be inspected. Identify service needs, defects, and hazardous conditions by looking, such as low oil levels, dirty filler cap.
  • Starts engine and checks monitoring and warning systems. Identify service needs, defects, and hazardous conditions (such as leads, burnt out lights through visual inspection).
  • Warm up engine according to weather conditions and manufacturers' instructions.
  • Cycle's equipment functions with the ability to activate all functions (such as brakes, steering, lights, wipers, hydraulic functions) according to weather conditions and manufacturer's instructions.
  • Determines work procedures. Ability to identify equipment and attachments needed to do job, identify access and exit points on site and line out job tasks to co-ordinate with other site personnel.
  • Understands symbols and markings on stakes and mark stakes/surface with appropriate symbols or markings, such as colored paint, ribbons.
  • Check grade using information on stakes and plans. Use grade-checking devices, such as laser levels, line levels, and sight levels.
  • Use safety controls and equipment. Respond to caution, warning, and hazard decals, lights, and symbols.
  • Sets up equipment, maintain stability of equipment, position equipment correctly, and demonstrates the ability to adjust to factors affecting safe operation of equipment.
  • Installs attachments with the ability to use tools effectively, and position equipment and attachments for installation.
  • Uses operating controls safely and smoothly. Use different operating controls simultaneously and reacts to changing conditions/situations.
  • Monitors performance of Grader by monitoring information from gauges and symbols. Uses own senses to monitor performance and identify equipment problems.
  • Troubleshoots equipment problems and identify possible solutions. Communicate problems accurately to others, such as mechanic, superintendent etc.
  • Gets the most out of the Grader by positioning it correctly, adjusting operation for weather conditions, materials being handled, limitations of the Grader, ground conditions etc.
  • Strips surface materials with the ability to work around site obstructions and hazards.
  • Spreads materials with the ability to position equipment correctly and work around site obstructions and hazards and to comply with job specifications.
  • Create rough/finish grade ditches in accordance with job specifications and work around site obstructions and hazards.
  • Create slopes (also known as inclines) by cutting or filling and blending materials in accordance with job specifications. Work around site obstructions and maintain stability of equipment.
  • Establish rough/finish grades to job specifications, such as correct elevation. Read site plan and work around site obstructions and hazards.
  • Shuts down equipment to include; cleans wheels and attachments before parking, parks grader in appropriate location, and shuts down and secures equipment.
  • Performs housekeeping tasks to include; clean items, such as windshields, rails, steps, instrument panel, sweep floor, remove garbage, and apply glass shields.

Safety Requirements:

  • Ability to work outdoors in high heat
  • Ability to lift and carry weights up to 50 lbs. unassisted
  • Ability to walk and stand on uneven surfaces for long periods of time
  • Ability to operate designated equipment by safe use of levers, knobs, handles and peddles
  • Ability to stoop, bend and climb as needed
  • Ability to read, see and understand signs, signals, commands, instruction and safety policies

Experience/Skills Required:

  • 5 or more years of previous experience with equipment operation is required.
  • Ability to operate company vehicles with a valid license and clear driving record is strongly preferred.
